The Daughters of Charity:
Responding With Love and Service to All!
Women of courage and purpose answered
the call once again to live their vision of loving and serving wherever
needed in a city that was in great need of healthcare services.
It was 1830 and the Daughters of Charity had arrived in New Orleans!
Most people believe that the Daughters
are the namesake for Charity Hospital. However, Charity Hospital
opened in 1736 and was in full operation by the State of Louisiana
for 94 years before the Daughters arrived. The Daughters successfully
nursed thousands of patients back to health during the cholera epidemic
in 1832. Being compassionately dedicated to the sick, the Daughters
were quickly asked by the State to assume control of Charity Hospital
in 1834.
The Daughters’ unending dedication to healthcare was further
expanded in 1859 with the opening of Hotel Dieu Hospital. After
providing excellent healthcare to the most vulnerable in the community
at Hotel Dieu Hospital for 134 years, it was sold to the State of
Louisiana. The proceeds were used to create the Daughters of Charity
Services of New Orleans (DCSNO). Post-Katrina, DCSNO operates three
healthcare centers and three mobile medical units, and provides
counseling for children in 10 schools. The goal is to ensure 100%
healthcare access and coverage for all, because the word “charity”
means “generosity and helpfulness toward those in need; goodwill
and love of humanity”!
Today more than 27,000 Catholic women in countries across the world
continue their charitable work of providing holistic care as Daughters
of Charity. When working with those who are sick and vulnerable,
the Daughters have always cared for people with love; treating them
with respect and even holding their hands!
“Wherever the need arrives, the Daughters of Charity will
respond to love and serve.
